Wicked The Musical

London theatre fans who like to think there is more than one viewpoint behind a good story could delight in buying Wicked tickets.

The musical is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, who was interested in the backstory of L Frank Baum's tale The Wonderful Wizard of Oz - why did Dorothy have to come up against witches at all and why were some of them so bad when others could be good?

Wicked was the result of his curiosity and in 2006, the musical version burst into the West End with the biggest opening in the theatre district's history. It took £100,000 in Wicked ticket sales during the first hour alone and that interest has continued ever since, resulting in more than three million people having seen the show up to now.

It tells the story of Elphaba - who will ultimately become the Wicked Witch of the West - and Glinda, who we will later come to know as the Good Witch of the North. They are thrown together when they have to share a room at Shiz University and forge an unlikely friendship, even though Glinda is beautiful and popular and Elphaba struggles to fit in.

However, when Elphaba is used by the Wizard of Oz and she realises he is a charlatan, she vows to fight against him and bring him to justice, even though Glinda will not stand alongside her and risk her social status.

Was Elphaba simply the victim of an unfair and corrupt system? Did she kidnap Dorothy for the right reasons? All this and more will be addressed in Wicked (Apollo Victoria Theatre).

It could be this depth of plot which had led to Wicked the musical receiving so many awards and countless positive reviews during its time in London.

Wicked theatre tickets

have much to offer, not only is the story engrossing, Joe Mantello has done a superb job in blending all the ingredients together to give a blockbuster musical.

The production has been voted Best West End Show for two years running by the public in the WhatsonStage.com Awards, as well as scooping a Laurence Olivier Award and a Visit London Award.

It was also named by Entertainment Weekly as "the best musical of the decade", beating off some stiff competition from other shows that have come and gone.

Wicked the musical currently stars Rachel Tucker as Elphaba and Louise Dearman as Glinda - as well as Zoe Rainey in the role of Nessarose - and is directed by Joe Mantello.

Stephen Schwartz is responsible for music and lyrics for such tracks as Defying Gravity and As Long As You're Mine, while Tony Award nominee Winnie Holzman has created the book.

However, Wicked is as good to look at as it is to listen to, thanks to its lavish set and the realistic look of the witches, who even have green faces. Susan Hilferty is the woman who designs the costumes while Eugene Lee creates a set that leaves you sure that sorcery really could exist, making the perfect background for a great tale of magic and mayhem.

Wicked tickets will leave anyone who goes to see the musical, humming the tunes and raving about the show to friends and family for some time to come.
